Rhizome Microgrant Proposal — 09.15.2024

Description

Tethered across worlds, the QR code exists at the intersection of “the human, computer, and material world.”

In this project, I hope to blur the boundaries we assign to bodies, revitalizing and mystifying the in-betweens of experience through a web-based audiovisual narrative, in a format similar to motto.io. Using QR’s as a binding agent between ideas, the project will explore the question: What does it mean to be touched by another across the web?

This project draws from the long lineage of rapport with the more than-human-world and references contemporary thinkers like David Abram, James Bridle, Robin Wall Kimmerer, and Austin Wade Smith.

What does it mean to be touched by another across the web, or to feel the careful graze of bird songs and tree mumblings? Of being addressed by sunlight shimmers, and of looking through the sentient gaze of a smartphone? Weaving Light is an exploration of our embodied relationships within the networked cosmos. Below are a few quotes from the ideas inspiring this project.

“A voice cannot carry the tongue and the lips that gave it wings. Alone must it seek the ether. And alone and without his nest shall the eagle fly across the sun.“

Kahlil Gibran .The Prophet

“For animism—the instinctive experience of reciprocity or exchange between the perceiver and the perceived—lies at the heart of all human perception. While such participatory experience may be displaced by our engagement with particular tools and technologies, it can never entirely be dispelled. Rather, different technologies tend to capture and channel our instinctive, animistic proclivities in particular ways.”

David Abram . Magic & the Machine

“Tentacularity is about life lived along lines — and such a wealth of lines — not at points, not in spheres.”

Donna Haraway . Tentacular Thinking

“How does our subjective experience enable us to recognize the reality of other selves, other experiencing beings? The solution seemed to implicate the body - one’s own as well as that of the other”

David Abram . Spell of the Sensuous

“Where we start to move forward is when we learn to ask questions which are less concerned with ‘Are you like us?’, and more interested in ‘What is it like to be you?”

James Bridle . Ways of Being

“I liken it to a process of wayfinding, of building the means to synthesize the many constellations and currents of life in order to understand one’s many orientations. The world always already was an internet.”

Austin Wade Smith . Queer Servers and Feral Webs
