Rhizome Microgrant Proposal — 09.15.2024

Description
Tethered across worlds, the QR code exists at the intersection of “the human, the computer, and the material world.”

In this project, I hope to blur the boundaries we assign to bodies, revitalizing and mystifying the in-betweens of experience through a web-based audiovisual narrative, in a format similar to motto.io. Using QR’s as a binding agent between ideas, the project will explore the question: What does it mean to be touched by another across the web?

This project draws from the long lineage of rapport with the more than-human-world and references contemporary thinkers like David Abrams, James Briddle, Robin Wall Kimmerer, and AWS.

Budget + tools

I ask 800$ for this project, which would allow me to pay for material costs of the QR artifacts (printing and ink and/or materials and laser etching) and allow me to pay for services to create several of the visuals, such as Polycam for 3D scans and other digital tools.

Additionally, remaining funds will allow me to spend more time learning web development tools, and cover some educational resources that may not be free. Currently I am teaching myself html and css, and I am also interested in improving my knowledge of web building tools like Cargo and Webflow.

To create the web part of the project, I plan to write the script/essay in common writing platforms, create visuals and prototypes using blender, figma, affinity and procreate, 3D scan content with polycam (or similar scanning apps), and develop for the web using either Cargo, Webflow, or coding with visual studio or similar platforms.

For the fabrication of the QR artifacts, I plan to design unique QR’s using affinity, and experiment their application on different surfaces, such as printing on handmade papers, or laser etching on wood or stone (have previously experimented with this)
